Three miles from the town is the resort base area of Mt. Crested Butte, a modern ski village complete with lodging, dining, shopping, and conference facilities. The resort and town are connected by a free shuttle bus. Crested Butte offers some of the steepest lift-served ski terrain in the USA. Extreme Limits is 550 acres of steep and deep, backcountry-style, expert-only skiing and riding. Author/extreme skier Lito Tejada-Flores calls Extreme Limits "the best adventure skiing in the Rockies." Crested Butte is home of Colorado's first X Games, the Annual U.S. Extreme Freeskiing and Boarderfest Championships, the Telemark Festival and the Elk Mountain Grand Traverse. Set amid towering mountain peaks, Crested Butte is a wonderful and truly unspoiled Colorado mountain town. The town boasts one of Colorado's largest National Historic Districts, with charm impossible to convey in words. Although "sophisticated" and "charming" are words synonymous with Crested Butte, this doesn't mean the town hasn't kept up a bit of its irreverence. Crested Butte is a great Colorado Ski Town, as different from those other overcrowded interstate highway resorts as you can get.
