Forecast Discussion - Updated for Saturday, February 06, 2016

MOSTLY SUNNY FOR MOST OF THE WESTERN US AND WESTERN CANADA RESORT AREAS

Except for the northern Rocky Mountains and Cascades, we expect mostly sunny skies and milder temperatures for most of the west this weekend. Next week (through the 12th of February) looks dry and mild for all western US areas including southwest Canada as a strong high pressure ridge gives the eastern US a return of winter. Next Wednesday (10th) areas like Whistler, BC and southwest Canada will start to see some higher mountain snows (minor snow level issues, then colder with snow top to bottom Thursday/ Friday (11th/ 12th). Late next week and weekend (12th on), we start to see Pacific storms moving into the US west coast again and affecting most of the western US for 5-7 days, maybe more. The first storm moves in on Friday (12th), affecting the WA and OR Cascades, and Tahoe-Mammoth first, then Utah on Saturday (13th), and moving into Colorado by Sunday (14th). This storm should be strong enough to drop a foot or more, which would be "moderate" snow for Tahoe.

Winter into Spring - The El Nino SST pattern is strong, right now, and it looks like we will see a VERY strong El Nino continue for the rest of this winter. This set-up would usually cause heavier rain and snow across California (mainly southern and central, including Tahoe (Tahoe is already seeing a better season than they have had in years), including southern California ski resorts and the southwest US this winter. This has been (as predicted) a vast improvement for Tahoe-Mammoth. Southwest Colorado and northern New Mexico usually do well, including Taos Ski Valley, who had a great season in 2014-2015 with the weak El Nino(ish) anomaly. Aspen is in between, and we would say average snowfall should be expected at Aspen-Snowmass in 2015-2016, which would make for a good year. We will be monitoring the progress of this right here, stay tuned... CM
