European Short and Extended Range Outlook
Tuesday, January 23, 2018

(Please email chris@snowforecast.com and let me know what you would like to see in this discussion)

This forecast primarily covers the Alps (France, Italy, Switzerland, Austria)

Today (Tuesday 23rd) and Wednesday (24th) - A ridge of high pressure builds in today for mostly fair weather across the Alps, though some moisture and a very weak weather disturbance pass through mainly northern France with some showers and clouds, otherwise a fair day for most. Clouds increase late day, with showers developing, and snow for the resorts Wednesday night into Thursday, moving north to south.

Thursday (25th) through Saturday (27th) - Thursday and Friday look like big-snow-total days, starting mainly Thursday afternoon, as low pressure sweeps through, and a portion of it breaks off from the main low and becomes a closed-low, meandering southward and away later Friday and Saturday. Snow is expected to end Saturday afternoon through overnight as a ridge of high pressure builds back in. Saturday is looking like a great day to show up as the sun comes out and the snow has fallen!

January 31 through early February 2018 - It looks like a large scale high pressure ridge will set up across the Atlantic, diverting the juiciest storms to the east, while drier and cold systems move through fast and drop mostly light to moderate snows occasionally late Jan through early February, mixed with periods of mostly fair and snow-free weather. CM
