LONG RANGE OUTLOOK from snowforecast.com

The strong, blocking, and freakishly permanent upper level high pressure ridge across the northeast Pacific and west coast of the US continues to block any real juicy Pacific storms hitting SoCal/ Big Bear, and the rest of the western US, as the real big dumps of Western US snow usually arrive in part from more of an over-water trajectory across the Pacific, that the current pattern does not allow (except in the case of fickle, and usually weak cut-off low pressure systems, though some of the biggest dumps of snow for SoCal mountain areas have come from cold, cut-off type low pressure systems). Instead we have been stuck with mostly no snow, or just sunny weather, with the real cold and snow far to the east.

It looks like the ridge of high pressure will hold through December, and even into the New Year, with no real winter events on the horizon, and mostly dry, sunny conditions expected, then winter should move back in for the west coast and Western US shortly after as the pattern shifts during early January. Some diverted (by the ridge) and mostly limited moisture or strength low pressure systems move through the west a few days before Christmas, and should set Colorado up with some decent snow coverage, though we are not expecting heavy snow, and it should drive some cold Santa Ana winds into Big Bear and Mountain High for good snowmaking at times. For now, if you are desiring a western US ski or snowboard vacation, the areas that will fare best (only in relation to other western US resort areas) are western Wyoming/ southwest Montana, and Colorado/ New Mexico (cut-off low pressure systems are the reason New Mexico was thrown in).
By early January, all ares of the western US will likely start to see some rain and snow, including Big Bear in southern California.

US Extended Snowfall Outlook
LONG RANGE OUTLOOK from snowforecast.com - Jan 18, 2018

The start of winter has been a bit delayed from what we forecast back in mid-December (by about a week), but is here, no doubt, and will be with us for the rest of January and into February most likely, with plenty of cold and snowy storms on the way...

Today and Friday we expect snow to fall across the Sierra Nevada (Tahoe-Mammoth), and Wasatch mountain ranges (Salt Lake Utah resort areas), to the tune of a foot of fresh for both Tahoe and Mammoth before its all over, and also 6 inches to a foot of snow for Colorado! Southern California will also see some snow, with some light snow expected in Big Bear mainly on Friday.

Do you want to ski or board in 6 inches to 1 foot of mostly fresh snow, while the sun shines? Go to Tahoe or Mammoth. Do you want to ski or board while its snowing, and 6 inches to 1 foot or more of snow expected? Go to Colorado or Utah for the freshest turns...

The coming weeks will be more busy and we expect frequent snowfalls across all resort areas of the western US and Western Canada. Follow your favorite forecasts at www.snowforecast.com.

LONGER RANGE: We expect a busy pattern (frequent snows) across the western US and Canada into early February.
