Forecast discussion for the Upper Midwest

Updated --  April 24th 12:43pm Highlights-  Last post of the season... ****************************************************

Short Range- 0-6 days- (Following is written solely for N.MN and the UP of MI as they are likely the only areas left in the region that still have ski resorts open)

Pattern change from recent warmth to much cooler conditions has already taken place or it soon to do so. Mid week snows for the Arrowhead of MN- accumulations likely in the 2-5" range. Snow will melt, but not as fast as it should this time of year with temps  below freezing at night and upper 30's  until late in the  weekend.

********************************************************** Long Range 7-21+ (updated 12:48pm  April 24th) Temps should return to near normal temps for the first week of May. Remains of the previous colder pattern may linger enough to produce some very light snows sometime around Friday,  May 5th.  Should have more May like temps for the 2nd full week of May. Thanks for reading. Next update --when conditions are warranted.   JB
US Extended Snowfall Outlook
LONG RANGE OUTLOOK from snowforecast.com - Jan 08, 2018

On Tuesday we expect a closed low pressure system to move through southern California mainly, with the northern portion hitting Tahoe and Mammoth. We are forecasting just under powder day totals for some, to over 1 foot of snow, possibly to 1 foot for Big Bear resort areas.

On Wednesday the closed low moves by mainly to the south of Colorado, across New Mexico, with light snow and lower snow levels for Colorado as a northern counterpart moves in as well to kick this low eastward. Decent snow totals are expected, heavier to the south for northern New Mexico including Taos Ski Valley, where  good dump of snow is expected.

On Thursday we expect clearing skies as low pressure exits and a ridge of high pressure builds in again, for mostly sunny skies and cold temperatures.

Thursday through Saturday we expect a drier system to move through the northern to central Rocky Mountains, with colder air and a light snowfall likely for areas of northern Idaho and Western Wyoming to Aspen and western Colorado as an "Alberta Clipper" type of system brushes the area.

LONGER RANGE: The big change coming is looking like just after the 15th with a large scale trough of low pressure setting up across the western US. The location of this trough will determine who benefits most from this change-over, but either way we are looking at more snow for all resorts across the western US. It is looking like the 16th-18th for the change-over to colder and frequently snowy.
