Ashcroft Ski Touring Discussion
Updated Tuesday August 21, 2018

Today and Wednesday expect a big increase in moisture and instability in the atmosphere across western Colorado due to an approaching low pressure system out of the northwest US, and some recycled monsoon moisture from out of the desert southwest, for scattered to numerous thunderstorms and showers developing across the area mainly this afternoon, then continuing through tonight. We are expecting some good soaking showers between this afternoon and Wednesday morning, and another round, though decreased (T-storms and showers) on Wednesday.

Thursday and Friday we expect a low pressure system to pass mainly to the north and push moisture out with it, for drier air, warmer days and cooler nights, with mostly sunny skies. If you are headed out for some biking or hiking, rafting, whatever, this is the time to go. CM

LONG RANGE: Next weekend we expect increased afternoon/ evening thunderstorms and showers across western Colorado, scattered to numerous across southwest Colorado, as high pressure ridging shifts east, while low pressure, fairly strong, drops in across the northwest US and allows increased moisture to move in from the south/ southwest (Gulf of Mexico origin mostly). The Gulf of Alaska low pressure system expected to affect the Northwest US (next weekend/ early the following week) with some snow possible for high elevation northern Rocky Mountain areas of Montana and southwest Canada (8,000 feet+ elevation snow is what its looking like). In early September, we expect an increase in moisture and an easterly/ southerly flow (increased moisture) while high pressure ridging jacks temperatures back up above seasonal norms. We do expect good chances for thunderstorms and showers at this time. Check our climatology section for detailed climatology info. CM
