Gold Run Nordic Center Discussion
Updated: Wednesday June 19, 2019 at 1:00am MST

YESTERDAY: "Plenty of clouds and moist air, with isolated showers this morning, cool temperatures today, and a well defined low pressure system is expected to move through later morning and afternoon, helping to trigger some thunderstorm and shower activity all across the area, with some heavy showers and snow accumulation on the upper mountain"

The latest low-pressure system clears out, with a mostly sunny and beautiful day expected under a drier northwest flow aloft. This is short-lived however...

On Thursday expect approaching low pressure as it drops south across the Northwest US and northern Rocky Mountains, causing a south/ southwest flow of warmer wind into the area for a nice and warm spring day, mostly sunny, but some isolated thunderstorms developing across the area by afternoon.

Friday and Saturday we expect low pressure to sweep through, with more much cooler than average temperatures and area-wide moderate to heavy showers expected in Aspen and the rest of western Colorado. Snow accumulations are expected again, with some flakes possibly falling below 10,000 feet by late Friday and Saturday.

Sunday and Monday we clear out with drier and milder conditions (highs remain in the 60's in Aspen, cooler than usual), as higher pressure builds in overhead, though we do not see much prominent ridging for any prolonged warm-up yet, though next Monday/ Tuesday/ Wednesday (24th - 26th) could see mid and upper 70's (f) for high temps in Aspen, while low pressure again approaches from the Northwest US. CM

LONG RANGE FORECAST: Mid and late next week (27th-30th) we expect low pressure to be affecting the area with increased thunderstorms and showers, then cooler with more unusually late snow accumulations to 10,000 - 11,000 feet. We are still in an El Nino SST (sea surface temperature) pattern, which usually portends a more active "monsoon" thunderstorm/ shower season for the summer, likely kicking in strong with the attendant warming to summer-like temperatures, right after the 4th of July. Fall/ Winter will be under the influence of this El Nino pattern as well. CM
Where to be this weekend? April 12th-14th

We have a winner for our Aspen-Snowmass lift ticket giveaway on INSTAGRAM, check it out... http://www.instagram.com/predicting_sickdays/

Colorado, and Sun Valley to Big Sky are the places to be this weekend... heres why:

#1 - A strong and cold storm is moving through Colorado and out onto the plains on Thursday, with moderate to heavy snow totals all across western Colorado, a storm total 1 to 2 feet for all areas! Northern resorts across Summit and Grand Counties will be favored under a northwest flow across the mountains.

#2 Resorts in the northern Rockies (Sun Valley through Big Sky look good) will see snow, mostly light to moderate, now through the weekend, for some fun fresh snow all weekend.

If you like sunshine plus deep fresh snow, go to Colorado, anywhere, northern resorts favored, but Aspen is looking at near a foot to 1.5 feet overall by Friday as the storm clears out... If you like the snow to be falling while on the slopes, head to the northern Rocky Mountains for best fresh coverage!
