Howelson Hill Ski Area Discussion
Western Colorado Weather Discussion - Jan 18, 2018

Expect mostly sunny skies (some high clouds move in though for filtered sunlight) and warmer temperatures today...

The big change we have been forecasting (since mid December) is moving in as the first in a series of strong Pacific winter storms moves in Friday night but mainly Saturday and Sunday, as a large scale trough of low pressure sets up across the western US. The first system moving through Saturday and Sunday will be a significant storm, with 1+ feet of snow for many areas including Aspen-Snowmass as we have a strong jet stream on Saturday (southwest oriented), plenty of moisture, and strong mid level dynamics as well. The first storm will favor southwest and west facing slopes, and southwest Colorado will finally get a heavy shot of snow as well!

Another storm moves in Monday and Tuesday with another good shot of snow, favoring northwest slopes and areas closest to the divide. This one looks much colder and will deliver less dense snowfall.

Next Wednesday we should be between storms, then next Thursday and Friday we expect a fairly strong low-pressure system to move through with more snowfall. That weekend, the 26th-28th looks like a great one to show up for the best conditions of the season, base depth and surface conditions all considered.

LONGER RANGE: More and frequent storms are expected to move through for the rest of January as large scale low pressure remains entrenched across the western US. Winter is Back! Expect winter and frequent snows to continue right into February. CM
US Extended Snowfall Outlook
LONG RANGE OUTLOOK from snowforecast.com - Jan 18, 2018

The start of winter has been a bit delayed from what we forecast back in mid-December (by about a week), but is here, no doubt, and will be with us for the rest of January and into February most likely, with plenty of cold and snowy storms on the way...

Today and Friday we expect snow to fall across the Sierra Nevada (Tahoe-Mammoth), and Wasatch mountain ranges (Salt Lake Utah resort areas), to the tune of a foot of fresh for both Tahoe and Mammoth before its all over, and also 6 inches to a foot of snow for Colorado! Southern California will also see some snow, with some light snow expected in Big Bear mainly on Friday.

Do you want to ski or board in 6 inches to 1 foot of mostly fresh snow, while the sun shines? Go to Tahoe or Mammoth. Do you want to ski or board while its snowing, and 6 inches to 1 foot or more of snow expected? Go to Colorado or Utah for the freshest turns...

The coming weeks will be more busy and we expect frequent snowfalls across all resort areas of the western US and Western Canada. Follow your favorite forecasts at www.snowforecast.com.

LONGER RANGE: We expect a busy pattern (frequent snows) across the western US and Canada into early February.
