Sunlight Mountain Resort Discussion
Sunday, Feb 18, 2018

A strong and more large scale low pressure system will be ginning up and approaching from the north today. Winds pick up today as the cold air out of the north starts to displace the warmer air over the area. This air we expect to move in early week is looking COLD! But, first, we see snow this evening and especially on Monday.

Monday and Tuesday we expect cold and large-scale low-pressure dominating the area, and the mostly Inland Western US (snow in Tahoe today though), and carving a major trough, driving limited moisture but piles of strong dynamics (scientific term: "piles of...") into Colorado this evening and tonight, but mainly on Monday, stalling some on Tuesday (and lighter snow but VERY cold with not much wind, so not as cold as it could be). We see a southwest flow across the mountains, and aloft, with strong mid and upper level dynamics. In this scenario, Aspen will do very well, but slopes to the south and facing southwest will do very well, as will the San Juan Mountains (Wolf Creek, Silverton, Durango Mountain). Blowing and drifting snow is expected on Monday, plus a bunch of fresh snow... Winds drop off a lot on Tuesday after the cold front moves in, so, cold Tuesday with clouds and lingering light snow showers, light to maybe moderate (in some spots) accumulations.

On Wednesday we see low pressure troughing remain, a bit unsettled, but so little moisture in the modified arctic air mass that we do not expect any snow. If there is snow it will be in the form of non-accumulating flurries. We see no forcing mechanism for snow outside of some minor upper level dynamics. We expect mostly sun on the mountain, but layer up, it will be cold.

On Thursday and through Friday expect another storm system to move through with snow, this time lighter it seems with a potentially more over-land path into the western US and southwest Canada, smaller-scale, and less dynamics or cold air (strength).

Saturday into Sunday (may end up with a fresh snow + sun Sunday in Aspen, 25th) we expect more snow from a couple of low pressure systems, likely to be smaller-scale, decent storms but we will be watching.

LONGER RANGE: The rest of February and into March should be busy for the western US, with frequent storms for Tahoe and Utah, moving across Colorado also as the east Pacific ridge breaks down some (this happens after Sunday mainly, after the 25th and through early March), allowing strong Pacific energy and moisture to move into the western US and southwest Canada. This should have been the pattern across the western US already, if patterns were anything near "normal" so far in 2018. More heavy snow is coming to Colorado, but Tahoe and Utah may be favored this time around (last few days of Feb _ early March). CM
US Extended Snowfall Outlook - Updated Feb 14, 2018
LONG RANGE OUTLOOK from snowforecast.com - Feb 15, 2018

Wednesday, Feb 14, 2018

LONGER RANGE: Saturday/ Sunday (17th-18th) through late next week we expect a busy pattern, with all areas of the west seeing frequent snow, some areas like Colorado should see snow every day it looks like, and with heavy snow for Colorado overall Sunday through next week, more moderate to maybe heavy for Utah and the northern Rocky Mountains (including the inland Northwest)/ Southwest Canada, and mostly light snow across Tahoe, but at least it will be snowing again. Winter is definitely coming back!

--> Late February and into March should be busy for the western US, with frequent storms for Tahoe and Utah, moving across Colorado also as the east Pacific ridge breaks down some (Feb 20th-22nd), allowing strong Pacific energy and moisture to move into the western US and southwest Canada, with abundant snowfall for all areas including those parched in recent months like in California. This should have been the pattern across the western US already, if patterns were anything near "normal" so far in 2018... Do You want to see OTHER AREAS mentioned, email me and let me know... CM
